Tailor-Made Adventure in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park

Once in a lifetime opportunity to see endangered mountain gorillas in their native habitat

Introduction

Encompassing 160 square kilometres (100 miles) of rainforest shrouded mountains and soaring volcanoes, the rugged trails of Volcanoes National Park lead to thick bamboo forests which are home to endangered mountain gorillas. Sharing 98% of human DNA, these gentle giants have long fascinated wildlife enthusiasts. The opportunity for a close encounter in Rwanda is a rare privilege. Nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas live in this protected park, promising a life changing safari amidst dramatic surroundings. While gorillas are the main attraction, the misty forests are also home to spectacular golden monkeys, forest elephants, spotted hyenas and a plethora of birdlife. In addition to trekking, guests can also learn about inspiring conservation programs and visit nearby villages for a unique insight into local culture.

Treks to see mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, breathtaking scenery, hiking and guided walks, opportunities to learn about the culture and the conservation efforts of this fascinating region of Rwanda.

When to visit

This region is magnificent at any time and gorilla trekking is possible year-round. Rwanda’s high altitude means cooler evenings and a pleasant tropical highland climate with an average temperature of 15 °C ( 59 °F). The driest seasons are June to mid-September and December to February.

Luxury Ecotourism with Volcano Views

Named for a silverback gorilla known for his placidity and gentleness, Singita Kwitonda Lodge offers a transformative and regenerative retreat right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda. Eight richly-textured suites feature hand fired terracotta brickwork, roaring fireplaces, heated plunge pools and impressive volcano views – creating a luxurious base to return to after gorilla-trekking. Conservation and reforestation are at the heart of Kwitonda and guests can visit the extensive nursery, learn all about gorillas in the dedicated Conservation Room, enjoy village and city tours and indulge in the freshest farm to table cuisine.

Unforgettable Family Adventure

Adjacent to Kwitonda Lodge, Singita Kataza House is a private-use, fully staffed villa ideal for families with a lavish master suite, junior suite, wine cellar, cinema, fire pit and two heated plunge pools.  Treks can be organized to visit gorillas (ages 15 +) and spot rare golden monkeys, while the flourishing vegetable gardens provide mouth watering cuisine, personalized and prepared by a private chef.
